If your RSS feed is anything like mine, you are being inundated with headlines about data breaches, ransomware attacks and identity theft. Unfortunately, this is the world we live in today. Just because it seems like this is the “norm” these days, doesn’t mean that you should be numb to these jarring daily headlines. So, what is one to do to be sure they are staying as safe as possible online?
Here are 9 tips that your employees can do to help right away and that you can put in place today for your business to help stay more secure in our virtual world:
- Only shop on secure websites. Check for the lock!
- Avoid financial transactions over public WiFi. And better yet, just never use a public WiFi connection with any device that does not have secure data storage.
- Always use a secure network whenever possible. Only connect to a public WiFi signal if you absolutely have to and never join an unknown network for any reason.
- Setup banking alerts for unusual or large transactions. Be sure your financial institution spot and notifies you as soon as there is any suspicious account activity.
- Use credit cards instead of debit cards whenever possible to illuminate money being stolen from your checking or saving account.
- Pick complex passwords and use a password manager with a long difficult password. Using a password manager means that you only have to remember 1 password to access all of your secure logins in one safe place.
- Never directly answer or respond to an email, DM, or text from any business even if it is familiar to you. Always go directly to the organizations’ direct web page instead of clicking on provided links.
- Make sure that your devices always stay up to date with the latest security updates. Yes, even your phones and tablets!
- Check your bank balances and statements regularly, even for accounts that you never use anymore.
Follow these 9 steps immediately to ensure that you are staying as cyber safe as possible.
